The
Borg Warner (Chain Drive) transfer box, fitted to some Range Rover
Classic vehicles have a piece of the casting which sticks out of
the back of the transfer box where the PTO cover would be on an
LT230 Transfer Box.
The
Range Rover / Discovery brake partially covers the PTO cover. Therefore
the Range Rover back plate interferes with this casting on a Borg
Warner box.
Additionally,
we have found several different orientations of the mounting bolt
holes on the rear of the transfer box on to which our back plate
attaches. So many in fact that if we made a back plate that covered
all the options, all the holes would join up to form a slot!
I still want
to fit an X-Brake! What do I do?
If
your vehicle is a Defender, a custom hybrid or a 2 door Range Rover,
you may be able to fit a Defender X-Brake which is compatible with
PTO's and thus does not interfere with the Borg Warner casting.
On a 4 Door Range Rover or Discovery, the rear passanger footwell
is too close to the top of the transfer box. In this case you would
need to cut a hole for the X-Brake caliper to poke through.
There
is still the issue of the mounting bolt holes possibly being in
the wrong orientation. The only solution is to re-drill your own
holes. If you decide to go down this route, follow this simple procedure
to accurately position the new holes.
1.
Take a photocopy of the original Back Plate and mark the position
of the original skid plate which hangs vertically below the disk.
2. Cut out the photocopy so you now have a paper Back Plate.#
3. Offer up the photocopy with the skid plate at the bottom.
4. Press your thumb into the bolt holes in the transfer box
causing an indent in the paper.
5. Remove paper from vehicle and lay on top of original Back
Plate, lining up the marked position of the skid plate.
6. Use a centre punch to mark the position of the thumb indents
on the Back Plate.
7. Drill 10.5mm holes at the centre-punch positions.
This
method is surprisingly accurate (it's actually how we made the very
first X-Brake). You should now be able to bolt it in place. If it's
tight, just enlarge the new holes a little to compensate.
Many
customers have carried out this procedure successfully.
I have
no tools / interest in this kind of modification. What do I do?
You can return the kit to us. So long as it is un-damaged (particularly
the bolt holes in the back plate are un-marked), we will refund
you in full less the shipping cost. We will deduct the cost price
of any missing or damaged parts from the refund. Please include
a note in the box giving your contact details and why you are returning
the product. We hope that if you have a compatible
vehicle in the future, you will consider an X-Brake for it.
