We receive quite a lot of enquiries from people who wish to build an
X-Brake for another vehicle we do not cover directly.
These
have included adaptions for Rakeway and Atlas transfer boxes, Jeep,
Toyota and Daihatsu's. Although we can't give specifics of each of the
individuals solutions - at least you know it is possible with a little
bit of fabrication.
We
have decided to put together some useful information and smaller, lower
cost kits of parts to make this as easy as possible.
| Heavy
Duty Kit |
|
This
is intended for larger vehicles where you need the braking
power. It includes the same caliper we use on Defenders
and Range Rovers and it is capable of holding a 2 Ton truck
with 3.54:1 diff ratios and at least 44" tyres on a
1:1 slope.
The
caliper is similar to that used on a number of JCB's, loaders,
dumpers & agricultural machinery. All spares are available
direct from us as well as most Agricultural plant dealers.
It
is supplied with a machined flat 220mm diameter disk drilled
for Land Rover Prop shaft bolt centres. However, there is
plenty of space left to drill additional holes for other
props.

The
kit includes:
- Heavy
Duty Caliper.
- Two
M16 x 140 High tensile bolts which are suitable to fix
the caliper to a mounting plate.
- Two
spacer tubes, which can of course be cut down to change
the spacing of the caliper from the mounting.
- 220mm
diameter, 9.5mm thick disk

|
| Medium
Duty Kit |
The
medium duty kit is intended for smaller vehicles or where
the transmission brake is mainly there for scrutineering purposes.
It will typically hold a 1.5 Ton vehicle with 4.7:1 ratio
diffs and 31" Tyres on a 1:1 slope.
It uses a light weight open frame caliper. The open frame
design has proven very successful in muddy environments as
there are no seals to fail or anywhere for water to ingress.
The mud tends just to fall out!
We have used the same disk as in the heavy duty kit which
delivers good results. There is scope to turn the disk down
to as little as 180mm diameter, with reduced braking torque.

| LT95
/ Land Rover FC101 Kit |
We
have included the LT95 kit in this section because fitting
is not as straightforward as our other kits.
We have designed a Back Plate which will attach securely to
an LT95 gear / transfer box. Unfortunately, if you are fitting
this to a Range Rover, part of the transmission tunnel lives
in the same space. Therefore you will need to trim the transmission
tunnel a bit to make it fit. Alternatively, if you have lifted
the body by a couple of inches, it may well bolt straight
up.
Fitting to a 101 is much easier - it goes straight on. The
issue is connecting it to the existing lever.
The kit is supplies with a cable and a bracket which replaces
the bell-crank normally situated close to the handbrake lever.
This converts a Range Rover to cable operation. On a 101,
you will have to adapt the long handbrake control rod to attach
to the end of the cable.
Alternatively, some customers have had a single custom cable
made which replaces the short cable at the front of the vehicle
and goes straight to the caliper. We considered getting some
of these made, but the cost of a small run of cables was prohibitive.
It will be cheaper for you to get one made.
For this reason, the 101 kit is supplied without a cable (making
it a little cheaper). If you want to adapt your control rod,
select the Range Rover LT95 kit. |
